Preparing for a Prop Firm Challenge: A Risk-First Checklist
Check a strategy against account rules, costs and execution constraints before entering an evaluation. No fixed risk size or timetable guarantees a pass.
Start with a tested process
Describe the setup, market, typical stop distance, holding period and conditions under which you do not trade. Separate observations from assumptions. A small sample of profitable trades cannot establish a reliable edge, and an evaluation should not require you to invent a new strategy to fit its marketing.
Translate the limits into scenarios
Compare remaining loss capacity with the combined exposure of positions that could lose together. Include costs and uncertain execution. Choose any personal stop using your own tested constraints rather than a universal percentage from an article. The firm’s boundary is a condition of the account, not a target amount to lose.
Define what makes you stop and review
Record a pause condition before trading: for example, a platform problem, an unresolved rule or an outcome outside the strategy’s tested assumptions. Keep that condition separate from a profit objective. Review the exact rules of the next account stage before progressing. Taking longer does not itself guarantee a safer outcome, and there is no standard schedule that suits every trader.
