Futures Trading Hours: Build a Contract-Specific Session Plan
Many futures markets offer access for most of the business day, but they do not share one universal timetable. Your trading plan needs the schedule for the exact contract, the exchange’s holiday notices and any earlier cutoff imposed by your broker or prop firm.
Many futures markets offer access for most of the business day, but they do not share one universal timetable. Your trading plan needs the schedule for the exact contract, the exchange’s holiday notices and any earlier cutoff imposed by your broker or prop firm.
Use the exchange calendar as the reference
For each product, record its opening time, scheduled pauses, final trading time and the time zone used by the exchange. Recheck holiday sessions and contract-expiration dates. CME publishes trading schedules and holiday information through its official trading-hours resource.
Convert the clock carefully
A schedule stated in U.S. Central Time changes its offset from countries that do not observe U.S. daylight saving time. Use the date of the session when converting it. Avoid carrying a fixed local-time conversion across the entire year without checking seasonal changes.
Then add your account’s earlier deadline, if any. An exchange can remain open after a prop firm requires you to flatten positions.
Make the schedule actionable
Create a daily checklist with the permitted trading window, scheduled news events, your final entry time and your mandatory exit time. Leave operational room to cancel working orders and verify that no position remains open. A calendar reminder is useful only when paired with a clear action.
Finally, distinguish availability from suitability. An open order book does not guarantee the spread or depth your strategy requires. Review execution quality by session and avoid assuming that results from one time window transfer unchanged to another.
A precise session plan prevents avoidable timing errors and makes your trade journal easier to compare across days.
